Motor Vehicle courses

FOUNDATION LEARNING:  is the name given to education provision at Entry Level and Level 1.  It is part of the wider 14-19 and vocational qualifications (VQ) reform programme.  It aims to improve the skills of learners by helping them gain credit-based qualifications at Entry Level and Level 1 in the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF), which can then lead them to appropriate destinations such as, Level 2 qualifications, supported employment or independent living.

OPEN Road is the place to be if you are into cars  and want to learn how to repair and maintain them. We offer lots of courses and programmes for you to get involved in so there is something definitely for everyone!

OPEN Road is an assessment centre for the Institute of Motor Industry (IMI)

IMIAL Entry Level - The Introduction to Vehicle Technology, (QCF)  for students from 14 years, in school or further education. These qualifications teach basic knowledge and routine tasks also give the students the opportunity to fast track onto higher level motor qualifications.

IMIAL Level 1 - Vehicle Maintenance, (QCF) This qualification is designed to engage and motivate 14-19 yr olds who are intersted in learning about the maintenance of motor vehicles and the various roles that are available in the retail motor industry.

The courses are aimed at year 9,10 or 11 students, our 'Entry Level Course is just the course for those who want to know more about cars. Students will get the low down on everything from being safe in the workshop, the functions of an engine and how to keep a gear box and brakes in shape.

With no formal entry requirements, these qualifications are open to anyone aged 14 and over who is interested in gaining a nationally recognised qualification.  IMI Awards qualifications include the vocational subject-based learning component of Foundation Learning.  These include Personal and Social Development (PSD) units within the qualifications that also meet the Foundation Learning programmes' current requriement for credits of personal and social development learning, which supports learners in their preparation for work life.

Students attend OPEN Road one or two days a week for two years. These are certificated courses, and during this time they will complete portfolios of work which is assessed. the IMI QCF's will need more classwork  as they are measured with a online mutiple choice test.

Should a student for what ever reason join at any time throughout the course, we can arrange to issue OPEN Road module certificates confirming the subject they have studied and completed.
